The Government Scholarships School of Electrical Engineering conducts research and training at the highest international level in Electric Power Engineering, fusion and space plasma physics, telecommunications and networks, information and control system (NICs).

The Government Scholarships scientific and technical activities of the Department of Electric Power Systems cover development and application of methods of analysis, simulation and control of electric power systems and integrated. The research activities in this area are divided into three areas, namely the dynamics of power and control systems, power markets and production planning and supply network planning system.

Background

Voltage Source Converters (VSC) can rapidly and independently control both active and reactive power. Furthermore, in a VSC-based Multi-Terminal DC Transmission Systems (MT-DCTS), the converters are functioning as ideal current sources in the DC-side (thereby parallel connections of several DC terminals should not pose any technical difficulties), and the change of the DC power direction is implemented by DC current reversal. Due to these characteristics, it is believed that by utilizing VSC-based MT-DCTS in a bulk power system, there is a great possibility of enhancing operational flexibility and controllability of the bulk power transmission, integrating large scale renewable energy sources at different locations, and future expansion flexibility.

From an economic, technical and research point of view, this project will mostly focus on the following questions and challenges:

With modern technology—for example Voltage Source Converters (VSC)—it is possible to build Multi-Terminal DC Transmission Systems (MT-DCTS), i.e., high voltage direct current systems that at several points connect to one or more alternating current systems. The Government Scholarships controllability of the new technology is believed to provide great possibilities of enhancing the flexibility of the bulk power transmission system, which will improve the conditions for efficient electricity trading, improve reliability, facilitate integration of large-scale renewable energy sources at different locations, and increase the possibilities for future expansion of the system.

This project will study MT-DCTS both from a technical and from an economical point of view. The research will mostly focus on the following questions and challenges:

The topologies of MT-DCTS.
How should the hybrid AC-DC system be optimally operated concerning N-1 criterion (or other probabilistic methods,) congestion management, electrical losses and electricity markets?
Derivation of control strategies for converters to keep the DC power balance and to fulfill the hybrid AC-DC system requirements. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using local and remote information, respectively, for these control strategies?
What is the impact of adding primary frequency control signals in converters on the hybrid AC-DC system operation?
How can the primary frequency control between the asynchronous AC systems connected by MT-DCTS be coordinated?

Qualifications

Functional Scholarships characterization of novel regulators of haematopoiesis and platelet function in Danio rerio A PhD position is available jointly supervised by Dr Ana Cvejic and Professor Willem H Ouwehand who have an international track record in megakaryocyte and platelet biology and genomics. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) provide a new and powerful approach to identify novel regulators of haematopoiesis and platelet function. In a next step we want to explore the mechanisms by which common sequence variation exerts its effect on haematopoiesis. This PhD Scholarships project will initially apply high-throughput screening methods in Danio rerio to determine the function of novel genes, identified by GWAS, in haematopoiesis. Further Scholarships studies will focus on novel genes encoding proteins that are important regulators of transcription. The Scholarships successful applicant will be trained in performing experiments with Danio rerio applying a variety of molecular biology and next generation sequencing techniques, state-of-the-art imaging systems, in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemistry and will mainly work in the Zebrafish genetics group of Dr Derek Stemple at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.

EUVIRNA Government Scholarships.

Introduction EUVIRNA
Virus infections remain a major cause of disease, with dramatic costs in mortality, morbidity, and economic loss worldwide. There is an unmet need for potent antiviral drugs, in particular against viruses with a (+)RNA genome which include many important pathogens of humans and animals.

Antiviral drug development requires a detailed understanding of virus replication and effective translation of this knowledge into drug discovery. Europe needs well-trained experts with multidisciplinary skills to advance this field. However, few, if any, European training institutes have the broad know-how required to provide such a comprehensive training programme. The EUVIRNA partnership aims to fill this gap with the proposed EUVIRNA training programme.

The EUVIRNA partnership consists of six outstanding European academic partners and four industrial partners, and an associated partner (specialized in education). All EUVIRNA partners are recognized leaders in their field, ensuring state-of-the-art training possibilities, and their skills are highly complementary. Two Visiting Researchers will complement the expertise of the partners.

EUVIRNA aims to introduce 17 Early Stage Researchers (PhD students) and 3 Experienced Researchers (postdoctoral researchers) to state-of-the-art knowledge and technology applied in molecular virology and antiviral therapy, with both local and network-wide training activities. Individual research projects, research training workshops and intersectoral secondments will be supplemented with complementary skills courses to improve career development and perspectives. The industrial partners are actively involved in the entire programme, and will furthermore organize a 1-week industry-oriented conference aimed at further bridging the gap between academia and industry.

Thus, EUVIRNA offers talented researchers a multidisciplinary and intersectoral training programme and prepares them for a future leading role in European molecular virology research and antiviral drug development.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria of Marie Curie Initial Training Networks apply. Only applicants who comply to these conditions will be considered.

Conditions of mobility
Researchers are normally required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment. One general rule applies to the appointment of researchers in a network:
At the time of selection by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account. As far as international European interest organisations or international organisations are concerned, this rule does not apply to the hosting of eligible researchers, however the appointed researcher must not have spent more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the selection by the host organisation in the same appointing organisation.

Example A : a French researcher has moved to Germany for the first time and has carried out research there for the last six months. He can be appointed within an ITN team in Germany.

Example B : a German researcher has spent 11 months in Germany just prior to his appointment. Before that period he’s been working in the UK for 3 years. Thus, he can be appointed in an ITN team in Germany.

Conditions of experience
Early-stage researchers (PhD students) are those who are, at the time of selection by the host institution, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged.

Experienced researchers (Postdocs) must, at the time of selection by the host organisation: – EITHER be in possession of a doctoral degree, irrespective of the time taken to acquire it, – OR have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience. In both cases, they should have less than 5 years of full-time equivalent research experience. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged. The length of individual appointments for an ER will be at least 3 months up to 2 years. It should be noted that an individual researcher may not be recruited first as an ESR and subsequently as an ER in the same network.

Example C: a researcher has graduated with a first degree in biology in 2004 and would like to start her Ph.D. in 2007. She is eligible as an ESR within the ITN as she has less than 4 years of research experience and no PhD.

Example D: a researcher obtained her PhD after 3 ½ years. She is not eligible as an ESR within the ITN even though she has less than 4 years of research experience. However, she would be eligible to be appointed as an Experienced Researcher within the first five years of her career.

Example E: a researcher obtained her PhD after 4 years and subsequently worked in research for 13 months under a postdoctoral position. She would not be eligible to be appointed as an ER as her research experience exceeds the first five years of her career.

Example F: a researcher is in the process of writing up her Ph.D. after 4½ years of research and would like to apply for an appointment within an ITN. While she has not yet gained her doctorate, she would not be considered as an ESR due to her level of experience. However, she would be eligible for recruitment as an ER.

Enzymes Government Scholarships from Garden Compost Could Favour Bioethanol Production

Today, bioethanol is primarily made from glucose. If xylose – which is found in straw, willow and other fast-growing plant species – could also be used efficiently, then ethanol production could increase significantly. A researcher in applied microbiology is well on the way to making this a reality.

The researcher in question is Nadia Skorupa Parachin and the secret of her technique is enzymes that she extracted from garden soil. If ethanol can be successfully made from xylose then ethanol production could increase by over 20 per cent – to the benefit of cheaper environmentally friendly fuel.

Ethanol is manufactured by fermenting sugars from plant material. At present, xylose is not used, despite being the second most common type of sugar found in nature. Succeeding with xylose requires good, quick enzymes that can get the yeast to also ferment the less appetising xylose.

Nadia Skorupa Parachin has tested her enzymes and the first results show that her enzymes bind xylose more efficiently than those that have been tested previously.

“In order for carbohydrates in forestry, plant and waste products to be used for ethanol production, enzymes are required in the yeast that ‘eat up’ the sugar and convert it into ethanol. If we just want to make use of the glucose then normal baker’s yeast is sufficient. However, if the xylose is also to be converted to ethanol, then genetic modifications have to be made to the yeast”, explains Ms Skorupa Parachin, who has recently patented her newly discovered enzymes.

Nadia Skorupa Parachin began by extracting DNA from a soil sample, then she cut it into small pieces. She was then able to build up a DNA library. After that she identified the most appropriate genes by coupling enzyme activity to growth on xylose.

Ms Skorupa Parachin’s decision to use soil is quite simply due to the fact that soil is considered the most diverse habitat on earth.

“One gram of soil contains ten billion bacteria! Enzymes and other proteins are found in almost unlimited numbers and can have all sorts of unexplored properties. I collected the soil sample from a garden in Höör, but any soil can be used”, she points out.

The reason why no researcher has previously identified new enzymes for xylose in this way is because it is not all that easy. Marie Gorwa-Grauslund, who is Nadia Skorupa Parachin’s supervisor, was the first person to realise that this genetic technique could work in this specific context. The technique, known as metagenomics, was originally used in environmental studies.

“The most interesting part is really the method itself. We have reasoned along entirely new lines. In fact, it has taken several months to develop the method for use in this area”, explains Professor Gorwa-Grauslund.

The Lund researchers will now also take the chance to apply their modified metagenomics technique in other areas, for example, to isolate enzymes that allow microorganisms to cope with difficult industrial conditions, such as high temperatures and high acid levels.

“Robust microorganisms are very important if biological production is to be economically viable”, says Marie Gorwa-Grauslund.

Ms Skorupa Parachin has now returned to her home country, Brazil. However, two or three other young researchers will continue to work on the technique. During the spring they will have chance to evaluate the new enzymes better.

“There are still a number of pieces of the jigsaw that must be put in place if ethanol production from xylose is to become financially viable. The process must be speeded up. But we hope that in the long term our method can help to make bioethanol production more efficient”, says Marie Gorwa-Grauslund.

The Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (HCLU) is now calling for applications to the “The Dark Side of Drug Policies” scholarship for journalists who are prepared to work on an investigative report about a specific problem generated by drug policies in their countries. The aim of the scholarship is raise media awareness on the consequences of drug control policies at the local or national level.

Background

This scholarship is part of the European Drug Policy Initiative (EDPI), an ongoing cooperative project of European NGOs to improve drug policies and promote human rights and harm reduction as the key principles to tackle drug related problems. The EDPI has recently targeted 10 countries: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Sweden. The initiative is coordinated by the Budapest-based Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (HCLU), one of the leading drug policy organizations of Europe. The project is funded by the Global Drug Policy Program of the Open Society Institute (OSI) and the Common Sense for Drug Policy (CSDP).

Eligible Candidates

All journalists based in Europe are eligible for the scholarship - please do not apply if you are not based in one of these countries. The application should include a CV of the journalist, a max. 2 page description of the aims, methods and the budget outline of the investigative report project. The overall time the applicant plans to spend on the report should not exceed 4 weeks.

In addition, the applicants should provide the following:

The HCLU will contract the selected journalist, the copy rights of the article will belong to the HCLU and will be published on the European Drug Policy Initiative (EDPI) website. The HCLU with its expertise on drug policy issues and its network of professionals will provide technical assistance and support for journalists participating in the project.

Selected journalists are requested to finalize and send their reports (in their national language) by 15 June. The articles will be translated into English and published on our website on the World Anti-Drug Day (26 June).

The Fulbright Foundation in Greece (www.fulbright.gr) welcome the new 2010-2011 International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for outstanding foreign students known to proclaim. The prize is designed to be the most prestigious international scholarships in science and technology.

The International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for PhD study at top U.S. institutions in science, technology or engineering. The program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Department of State (ECA) and will convey the message that the U.S. remains the first choice for serious scientific studies and research, and that America will not only first-class talents, but also encourages future leaders to advance their career by studying in the United States to make.

For 2011, prices have about 45 candidates for the world demonstrate the unique capabilities and innovations in science, will be provided. A competition for the year 2011 will be held around the world, you up for Science and Technology PhD Award participants benefit from research and study at prestigious U.S. institutions. Program Design:

The Fulbright Foundation is now asking the candidates for the candidates to participate in the 2011 Fulbright Science and Technology Program. Recipients must be enrolled for PhD students in top U.S. universities in science, technology and engineering for the academic year 2011-2012. The International Fulbright Science and Technology Award is a worldwide program.

Eligible areas are:

Aerospace and astronomics and aerospace, agriculture (with emphasis on theoretical or just research-based), Astronomy / Planetary Sciences, biology, biomedicine, chemistry, computer science / technology, energy, engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, Ocean Engineering and Petroleum), Environmental Science / Engineering, Geology / Geosciences and the atmosphere, information sciences and systems (engineering focus only), materials science / engineering, mathematics, neuroscience, oceanography, public health (focusing only theoretical research) and physics. While the desire to seek a more appropriate agricultural applied field of study, which are theoretical and based on research in areas such as entomology, plant biology, Plant Pathology, Soil Science and are eligible for this award.

The Office of Academic exchange programs (ECA / A / E) S. U. State Department will fund scholarships for up to three years for this contest. After three years of U.S. universities will be asked to cover the remaining costs will be extended to complete a doctorate. Placement of students will be administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

PRICE:

Applicants must be citizens of Greece ext and approved by the Fulbright Foundation in Greece to apply (6 Vasilissis Sofias, 106 74 Athens, Tel No. 30 210 724 1811 30 3 210 724 1811, e-mail: @ Greek Fulbright program. g). Candidates must have a bachelor's degree from a Greek university 1st to be completed in August 2011, with an average grade of at least + / - 8.0/10, and a good knowledge of English with a recent TOEFL (or equivalent) of 580 or higher (237 CBT or 92 on the iBT). A GRE General Exam scores will be at least 700 in the quantitative research. Scores GRE exam is required for all candidates in the following disciplines: biology, biochemistry, cell biology and chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics.

Each applicant must match the Fulbright office in Greece (greekprogram@fulbright.gr register) of May 15, 2010 and is required to submit online application and all supporting documents. A complete application includes:

Once submitted, the Fulbright Foundation in Greece will be reviewed and candidates to nominate.

Nomination and selection criteria: first screening will be conducted by the Fulbright Foundation in Greece, 6 Vas. Sophias Avenue, Athens 106 74.

Screening and U.S.: Auditors will all major and appointed deputy investigations and II is a list of all applications takes technical service. Hispanic Program Pays people to stay in school

Pima Community College (Tucson, Arizona), the plans of the Hispanic men pay to stay in school because their graduation fees are so low.

Under a new program called Gain, 500 men paid $ 1500 for each successful completion of classes, as well as a range of support services.

Zinkernagel Scholarship

The Zinkernagel Scholarship is in honour of Professor Rolf Zinkernagel, who shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Professor Peter Doherty in 1996 for work done in the JCSMR. One Zinkernagel Scholarship will be awarded annually to the highest ranked successful JCSMR, (College of Medicine and Health Sciences) applicant for an Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (EIPRS).

ANU Location of Study: John Curtin School of Medical Research
Stipend: A$22,500 (2010 rate) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments
Other Benefits: Travel to Canberra from within Australia; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance.
